0•5•30 COMBINATION OF PREVENTION + Oral Health
What is it?
It’s the combination of four lifestyles, a good starting point for preventing most chronic diseases.
0: Means not smoking and avoiding exposure to second-hand smoke
5: Means eating at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day
30: Means doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day
Oral Health: Means flossing once daily and brushing your teeth twice daily
What makes our region stand out: adding oral health to the original program
Oral health is a determining factor of overall health and plays a vital role in a person’s quality of life. A healthy mouth and healthy teeth make it possible to have a varied diet, which contributes to better overall health. A large part of the population is affected by oral diseases, the most common of which are gum diseases, cavities and oral cancer. Studies show that there are links between the health of the gums and certain chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and diabetes, not to mention premature births and underweight newborns.
These dental diseases are chronic illnesses that can be prevented by adopting lifestyles proposed by the program, much like the other chronic diseases that this program aims to prevent.
The best way to prevent cavities and gum diseases is through daily oral hygiene, more specifically, brushing and flossing. Furthermore, a diet that does not lead to cavities, such as one rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, contributes to strong, healthy teeth, bones and gums. In addition, avoiding smoking helps keep gums healthy, all while preventing oral cancers.
For living environments that foster healthy lifestyles
The 0•5•30 COMBINATION OF PREVENTION + Oral Health promotes healthy living habits for adults in the workplace, at home and in leisure. It aims to prevent chronic diseases by proposing:
-a unified and integrated message promoting the adoption and maintenance of four lifestyles that promote good health (0•5•30 + Oral health);
-concrete ways to ensure that your living spaces (workplace, leisure venues, outdoors) facilitate these lifestyles.
Having and maintaining good lifestyles may seem daunting, but in an environment that fosters these healthy choices, it’s so much easier!
