Seasonal Flu

What is seasonal flu?

Seasonal flu (also called influenza) is an infection of the respiratory tract. It is caused by the influenza virus and spreads very easily. The flu virus is usually active from December to March or April. However, influenza is a virus whose behaviour is unpredictable. It is also possible for the flu season to end earlier or later.

Most people in good health recover on their own from the flu. However, others (like people aged 60 and over, people with a chronic illness, including significant obesity, and children aged 6 to 23 months) are more at risk for developing complications. Complications from the flu can lead to hospitalization and sometimes death.

Vaccination: the best way to avoid complications

Vaccination is the best way to avoid complications related to the flu. Every November, a free vaccination campaign against seasonal flu is launched throughout Quebec. This campaign aims to reach groups at risk, as well as their family and friends. Everyone else can get vaccinated for a minimum fee by visiting specific medical clinics or pharmacies in the region.

Effectiveness only lasts a short time for some. It is therefore necessary to get vaccinated every year.

To find out where and when to get vaccinated, contact the Centre de santé et de services sociaux in your region or contact your doctor.
